11-year-old Godfrey dreams of returning to school and the soccer field, but his hope for a normal life depends on the miracle of finding a stem cell donor who can provide the life-saving match he so desperately needs.

KwaMhlanga, South Africa (21 August 2025) – In the town of KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga lives an 11-year-old boy who dreams of going back to school, playing with his friends, and just being a kid again.

But these dreams have sadly been put on hold because Godfrey is fighting a tough battle with Aplastic Anaemia.

His mother, Betty, first noticed something was wrong when her bubbly, soccer-loving son began losing his spark. He became slow, fatigued, and eventually started experiencing uncontrollable bleeding.

After years of searching for answers, Godfrey was finally diagnosed with the rare and life-threatening blood disorder in 2023.

Since then, he and his mom have been travelling monthly to Steve Biko Academic Hospital for blood transfusions. The journey is long, tiring, and deeply emotional.

Last year, Godfrey couldn’t pass Grade 5; his illness made it difficult to cope with school. Betty has also had to focus all her attention on his well-being.

“I didn’t know about this illness until Godfrey was diagnosed. I don’t work, so I have to show up for my son the best way I know how,” Betty shares.

With each passing day, this young warrior faces his journey with courage beyond his years, now in urgent need of a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

Despite it all, Godfrey remains full of hope and cannot wait to be on the sports field and do all the fun things boys his age do.

DKMS Africa is currently appealing to people to register as stem cell donors. This free process could replace a boy’s tiring hospital visits with trips to exciting soccer tournaments, and a mother’s sleepless nights with the happy days of seeing her son thrive.

If you haven’t already, your selfless act of registering as a donor could be the miracle he’s been waiting for.
