Three hearts, bound by love and loss, will take to the streets of Cape Town to run their first full marathon, not just as a physical challenge, but as a moving tribute to a beloved son and brother, and a hospital that became a source of hope.
Cape Town, South Africa (29 August 2025) – This October, Michele, Mitchell, and Megan Du Toit will be taking on their very first full marathon in honour of their beloved son and brother and in support of an extraordinary hospital that cherished his life just as much as they did.
Turning their grief into an inspiring act of love, they will lace up their shoes and take the starting line of the Cape Town Marathon to raise funds for a cause close to our hearts: the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.
“Two years ago, the three of us completed our first half-marathon and have run three more since. Now, we’re upping the stakes and taking on a full 42.2 km, not just for ourselves, but for the children and families who walk much harder journeys every day,” says Megan.
For this family, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital is no ordinary hospital. It is where their beloved brother and son, Cameron du Toit, received treatment after being diagnosed with leukaemia.
“Cameron was born on 7 October 1997, and although his life was heartbreakingly short, he filled our world with love, courage, and light. He passed away on 6 August 1999, just shy of his second birthday.
“In honour of Cameron’s birthday month, and in memory of all the brave children who face similar battles, we are hoping to raise R28,000 for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Cameron would have turned 28 this year, and this goal represents both his age and our love for him,” Megan shares.
The Du Toits have already raised R17,753 so far and are appealing to those touched by their story to help bring healing to young warriors and their loved ones.
“Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. Your support helps bring hope, healing, and comfort to children and their families during the toughest times.”
