After a serious injury on the rugby field, Luca Watson chooses forgiveness and reconciliation over revenge.
Johannesburg, South Africa (10 September 2025) – When a brutal on-field tackle left him in the ICU, 15-year-old Luca Watson made a choice that would inspire players and adults to forgive rather than seek revenge.
Known more widely in equestrian circles, where he competes as a Proteas show jumper, Luca has now become an unexpected ambassador for rugby after a life-changing incident on the field.
In July, during an age-group game between Pirates and Diggers in Randburg, Luca scored an incredible try after running almost the entire length of the field from his own side. But moments after grounding the ball, a defender drove a knee into his head. The blow fractured his jaw in five places, forcing him into the ICU for four days and leaving him unable to compete in the Youth Olympic Games qualifier in South Africa. This was a devastating setback for his equestrian career.

The offending player was sanctioned, but Luca’s response went far beyond what anyone could have expected. Instead of bitterness, he chose forgiveness. Instead of demanding retribution, he sought to educate.
“I do not want anyone to look for revenge, but rather to learn, grow and be educated by the consequences of a split-second action.”
Once recovered enough to speak, Luca visited Diggers to address players, coaches, and officials. His speech resonated far beyond that rugby field, reminding everyone of what the sport should stand for: respect, humility, and fellowship. Pirates chairman Brad Guymer described him as “a great ambassador for the sport” and praised his courage in choosing reconciliation over anger.
In his own words, Luca offered a message of perspective and hope.
“As awful as this has been for me, eventually we are all going to move on. What happened to me should not happen to anyone on the field. It is not part of the game. Going forward, when someone scores a try, congratulate him. That is the spirit of rugby, the spirit of the game. I forgive him. God forgives, and we all forgive.”
For a teenager robbed of both rugby and equestrian opportunities, Luca Watson has turned suffering into a moment of teaching. His words now echo as a powerful reminder that true victory lies in sportsmanship.
