Zintle’s friends softened the grief of her mother’s passing by presenting her with the most thoughtful gift, ensuring her mom’s spirit was present to celebrate her university graduation.

Cape Town, South Africa (26 September 2025) – For many of us, our parents have played a central role in moulding and shaping who we are from the moment we entered this world, well into our adult years.

They are the ones we’ve run to in times of trouble or uncertainty and the ones who have built a firm foundation for us to learn and grow, often having sacrificed so much to provide us with a life they never had.

We long for nothing but to make them proud, and there is a unique feeling that comes from having their support during our biggest moments.

When Zintle Zekevu’s mother passed away just two months before she could see her graduate, what was supposed to be a celebration shared between the two of them was sadly taken away.

However, this is not a sad story; it is one of a friendship that showed up and softened the grief on Zintle’s special day.

“My mother passed away two months before my graduation, and my friends got me a portrait of her,” the University of the Western Cape law graduate said.

Zintle was overwhelmed with emotion and amazed at how her friends helped keep her mother’s presence alive at her graduation.

“I cried so much that by the time I took pictures, my makeup was a mess. Friendship is such a beautiful concept,” Zintle said.

The Facebook post resonated with social media users, with many responding with positive messages for Zintle, assuring her that her mother was proud of her.

“Your mom is beautiful, and she’s watching you keep doing well sisi, and make her proud wherever she is,” said Nokulunga Majozi.

Neo Ntseke also commented:

“Where she is, she is proud of you and congratulations.”

Though her mother was not there in the physical, Zintle’s friends were there to honour her memory, stand in the gap, celebrate her milestone and affirm her brilliance as she looks to reach new heights!
