Pretoria’s streets came alive beneath blooming jacarandas as thousands of runners took on the City2City challenge.

Pretoria, South Africa (30 September 2025) – Pretoria’s streets came alive on Sunday as thousands of runners, from elite athletes to weekend joggers, filled the jacaranda-filled avenues for the City2City Marathon. The event blended fierce competition with a festival of fitness, giving South Africans a reason to lace up and celebrate the joy of running together.

From the gruelling 50km ultra marathon to the shorter 5km race, there was something for everyone. The headline 50km saw South Africa’s Onalenna Khonkhobe deliver a stellar performance, storming to victory at Pilditch Stadium in a time of 2:52:01. In the women’s ultra, Margaret Jepchumba ran a commanding race to take the crown.

The shorter distances brought their own thrills. The 10km event was a highlight for social runners and speedsters alike, with Nedbank’s Naomy Jerona claiming the women’s title. In the men’s race, Erick Ngeno took first, closely followed by Tshepo Mphulanyane.

The day was also about atmosphere. Pretoria’s iconic jacaranda blooms brightened the route as families, friends, and supporters cheered on every stride. From the seasoned athletes chasing podium places to first-time runners chasing personal milestones.

The event collaborated with travel partner, Gautrain, which ensured seamless transport to and from the race.

With its mix of top-class performances, community spirit, and Pretoria’s springtime, the 2025 City2City Marathon cemented its place as one of South Africa’s most loved road-running spectacles.
