Northwood School have taken the marimba crown!
Durban (02 October 2025) – The Durban-based boys’ school has officially been crowned the South African Schools Marimba Champions after an epic run at the national competition, hosted at Michaelhouse this week.
The Northwood Marimba Band, led by their passionate conductor Mr Gale, brought all the vibes to the stage, and had their audience (and even us) moving.
After two days of intense performances and competition against 22 of the very best schools in the country, they made it through to the finals and clinched the crown.
Special mention goes to Mr Gale, whose inspiration and belief in the group helped push them to championship level.
The school expressed their pride in their latest star pupils, adding to an incredible list of wins they’ve celebrated this year so far.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Mr Gale and his Marimba Band who competed at the national Marimba Competition at Michaelhouse over the past two days. Our boys pulled out all the stops…Their championship winning performances showcased not only their talent, but their innate energy and passion for the instrument – we are simply in awe,” the school says.
Out of the many amazing teams that competed, Northwood School placed first, followed by St Mary’s DSG Kloof and Michaelhouse. Well done to the top contenders!
