A 700km walk from Gauteng to Durban aims to turn hope into opportunity by raising funds for a community skills centre, empowering unemployed youth.

South Africa (13 October 2025) – It’s inspiring to see people taking bold steps to tackle youth unemployment in South Africa. A post shared by Zama Nobevu highlighted an initiative set for 22 October 2025, where a group of dedicated individuals will walk 700km from Greenfields in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, raising funds to establish a community skills centre for young people, Pariio Community Skills Centre.

This initiative responds to the high unemployment rates affecting disadvantaged youth, many of whom end up exposed to harmful influences such as drug abuse and crime. The skills centre will provide a safe space for learning and creativity, offering free training in practical trades that give participants a chance to earn an income and develop real-world skills.

The centre looks to focus on sewing and baking classes, giving young people hands-on opportunities to build expertise. To make this vision a reality, the project requires 20 electronic sewing machines, three containers to serve as classrooms, and a baking oven.

More than 60 athletes have already signed up for a virtual run as part of the fundraising campaign. Supporters are also encouraged to contribute any amount via the campaign page on BackaBuddy.

The organisers hope that, beyond providing skills training, the centre will open real employment opportunities and allow young people to engage in productive, meaningful activities. By combining endurance, community support, and hands-on learning, this project aims to create lasting change for the youth of South Africa.
