From classrooms and offices to community spaces, South Africans across the country joined in to celebrate Shades Day, a campaign with a powerful message about eye health and support for people living with visual impairment.
South Africa (24 October 2025) – If there is one thing South Africans know how to do, it’s to come together for a good cause. This year’s Shades Day was a clear reminder of that spirit.
On 17 October, people across the country slipped on their favourite sunglasses. This was not just for the style, but for the cause behind it. Shades Day 2025 once again shone a light on the importance of protecting our eyes, while raising awareness and support for the visually impaired community through the South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind.
Scrolling through the Association’s Facebook page, one could not help but smile at the energy and enthusiasm that filled the day. There were learners laughing on the playground, colleagues posing for group selfies in offices, and families (even their pets) joining in the fun. It was a collective reminder that sometimes, the simplest gestures can make the biggest impact.
The photos and smiles carried a deeper purpose. To promote eye health and to support programmes that empower visually impaired South Africans to live with greater independence and confidence. Funds raised during the campaign will go towards initiatives such as guide dog training, mobility assistance, and daily living skills.
As the Association shared, the ongoing support from the public continues to make a lasting difference.
“Every pair of shades worn, every post shared, and every donation made helps us bring visibility to the challenges faced by those with visual impairments.”
Shades Day 2025 may have come and gone, but its message remains: when people come together, even for something as small as wearing sunglasses, it spreads awareness and helps brighten someone else’s world.
