A dog was trapped in a filthy water channel filled with sewage and rubbish for a gruelling 24 hours, enduring cold and isolation until a Good Samaritan alerted the Animal Welfare Helderberg, prompting inspector Kyle to rush to the scene on Sunday night to end the poor boy’s suffering.

Helderberg, South Africa (28 October 2025) – Cold. Alone. In the water. Among heaps of waste. This is what one poor dog had to endure for 24 hours after somehow finding its way into a water channel filled with sewage and rubbish.

The dog is said to have been trapped in the filthy water for an entire day, unable to get out until someone finally alerted the Animal Welfare Helderberg.

Sunday night, one of the welfare inspectors headed to the site, determined to save the dog from the prolonged distress and suffering it had been experiencing.

“Inspector Kyle went out and managed to rescue him. He was brought into the kennels in complete shock and freezing cold,” Animal Welfare Helderberg confirmed.

The unnamed dog was given a warm bed, a full meal, and, this morning, a refreshing bath.

“This morning our volunteers gave him a lovely bath. He is happy and content with a full tummy! He smells nice and clean, and is currently fast asleep in his bed,” the team reported earlier today.

The news of the dog being brought to safety and now under the right care – we imagine his soul yearned for in those cold and frightening hours – has also touched the hearts of many people online who are celebrating his incredible rescue and recovery.

“It’s heartbreaking to see dogs trapped like this. Thank you for saving this precious pup,” commented Lena Terblanche.

Lynda Coughlan also expressed her gratitude to the Good Samaritan who reported the dog.

“Poor boy. Thank you, Kyle, for saving him and to the rest of the team for looking after him. Hope he finds a wonderful home,” wrote another user, Raffi Serafini.

We’re so glad this little guy is safe and sound. We commend the person who heard his distant cries and called for help, as well as those who faced difficult circumstances to rescue him.
