While the Du Plessis family’s world was abruptly turned upside down following a devastating motor vehicle accident in Pretoria, the compassion and support of South Africans continue to keep their hope alive.
Pretoria, South Africa (13 November 2025) – On the Thursday evening of 30 October, while on their way to church, the du Plessis family could never have anticipated how their lives would be abruptly altered before they’d even reach their destination.
That fateful evening, they were involved in a devastating car accident near Roodeplaat, Pretoria, which plunged them into the chaos of hospital stays and medical procedures.
“Miraculously, our lives were saved, but the vehicle is a write-off. We serve an almighty God,” recalls mom, Elizabeth Du Plessis.
However, with no medical aid and their 15-year-old daughter Jessamé in need of urgent surgery after fracturing her pelvis and femur, they turned to their community for help.
Elizabeth launched a BackaBuddy funding campaign, and within a week, 226 donors raised more than R228,000, allowing Jessamé to access the critical care she required.
Thanks to this financial aid, Jessamé and Lyzette were moved to Netcare Moot Hospital, where they received private medical care.
According to Elizabeth, Lyzette and Gys are now home and healing. But for Jessamé, the road to recovery is still long.
“Jessamé is currently in Steve Biko Hospital, ward 4.4. We had to transfer her, as the Private Hospital’s quote for her operation was about R750,000.
“She still has to be operated on for the pelvic and left fractures. We do not have an indication as to when the operation will take place. She is happy and well taken care of. We do believe that the operation will take place on God’s time!”
The Du Plessis Motor Vehicle Accident crowdfunding campaign remains open for donations. The family continues to recover, surrounded by love, faith, and overwhelming support from across South Africa.
