Little Heidi’s quiet suffering was noticed just in time. Despite having well-off owners, this ageing dog had been neglected and matted until a kind woman and dedicated animal heroes intervened.
Centurion, South Africa (09 December 2025) – Just when they thought they had seen it all, the Dogs Trust team were left astonished by one of their recent calls.
A lovely lady who had spotted a little dog in a garden in a rather affluent area in Centurion called the Dogs Trust to assist. This lady had previously approached the owners and asked whether they would be willing to surrender their dog, which appeared to be poorly cared for.
Their unexpected answer: ‘Yes, please, she is old, we are just waiting for her to die’.
“When we arrived to collect Heidi, the family didn’t even come out of the house, we could see them in the living room, watching TV. They saw us, but didn’t even bother getting off the couch,” The Dog Trust said.
The little, old girl, Heidi, was literally one big knot of ungroomed fur.
“It took our lovely groomer almost an hour to slowly and carefully get the carpet of matted fur off her. Underneath all those matted knots was the most pitiful, skinny little dog. Full of raw skin where the fur had knotted and rubbed for years.”
After much care and cutting, the knots were eventually shaved off, revealing the most beautiful little face.
“Heidi is understandably wary of people and still quite skittish. We estimate her to be around 10 years old, maybe more, but we are taking her to our vet today for a thorough check.”
Thanks to the observant, kind-hearted lady who noticed a dog’s quiet neglect and the tireless dedication of the Dogs Trust, Heidi is now safe, receiving essential veterinary care, and finally starting the life she deserves. Her best years begin now!
