Identical twins Bou and Lau made every step count, raising funds to support terminally ill patients in the Overstrand sub-district.

Hermanus, South Africa (27 January 2026) – Bouwer and Laurentius are twin brothers in their late fifties. They’ve done life together. Before retiring five years ago, the siblings were police captains who worked on the force for more than three decades, serving communities in Khayelitsha, Pretoria and Brackenfell.

Making a difference has extended far beyond their duties as officers. The twins have often walked to raise funds for charity, and they’ve just done so again!

Bou and Lau recently took on a stroll from one point of the Western Cape to another, in a bid to support the Overstrand Hospice in Hermanus. The hospice is a non-profit organisation that relies on donors, supporters and fundraising initiatives to provide free care for terminally ill patients and their families.

The Schoonwinkels did what they knew could make a real impact. Over four days, along with their support team, the brothers covered 104km from L’Agulhas to Danger Point. By the end of it, they’d raised R60,167 for the hospice.

“So 2026 kicked off for us on a big high note with the handover of the Kuslangs vir Kanker Stap funds to Overberg Hospice. A big thank you to everyone for your contributions,’ the twins shared [translated].

The brothers say they were bowled over by the response they received, with support from all around the world.

“We are thrilled by the support, even from complete strangers as far away as Namibia, Australia, England and the USA. By God’s great grace, we passed the R40,000 mark. We would like to sincerely thank each and every person,” the twins added [translated].

They recently made the delivery. The hospice’ Sister Susan van Sittert and Sister Ralie Dicks received the donation in person.

“We want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Overstrand Hospice team for this remarkable effort,” the organisation shared.
