The Lowveld sky put on a show this week! A stunning electrical storm was captured on camera across Hazyview, Skukuza and Sabi Sabi.
Mpumalanga, South Africa (22 April 2026) – While it might appear otherworldly, electrical storms are common occurrences in areas like Mpumalanga and Limpopo, especially in the summer months.
On Tuesday afternoon-evening, the spectacle lit up the sky as intra-cloud lightning (also known as sheet lightning) lit up large, towering cloud formations over the safari region. Some safari-goers would have been lucky enough to spot the storm from their evening game drive!
One video, shared by Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, which sits on the southwestern section of the Kruger, captured the storm in time-lapse.
Another video shared by Gary Bester captured the storm as it moved over Skukuza.
Images and video captured by B1 Photo Safaris in Hazyview captured the electrical storm in incredible detail.
What often makes this kind of storm so captivating is how the lightning spreads within the clouds, lighting up the sky in an eerie and almost otherworldly glow. What a treat from nature!
