Proof that you’re never too small to make a ‘paws-itive’ difference! 10-year-old changemaker, Aimee Rautenbach, recently turned her Cub Scout challenge into a fundraising mission of love for the animals of the East London SPCA.

East London, South Africa (23 April 2026) – As a dedicated member of the 1st Vincent Cubs Group, 10-year-old Aimee Rautenbach has been working toward her Leaping Wolf Badge. This is the highest honour a Cub can achieve through SCOUTS South Africa, requiring the completion of a significant “Personal Challenge”.

While many might have chosen a goal for self-improvement, Aimee decided to look outward. The Stirling Primary Grade 5 learner chose to dedicate her challenge to a fundraising drive for the East London SPCA.

Her inspiration took root during last year’s Mandela Day, when Aimee spent her 67 minutes cleaning cages and playing with the animals. She was so deeply moved by the compassion of the staff and the needs of the animals that she knew she had to return.

Because of that experience, choosing the ELSPCA for this year’s challenge was an easy decision!

When asked what motivated her, Aimee shared:

“Because I love Animals and I love the SPCA. I used to volunteer there (on Mandela Day), and I want to help the animals in need.”

Aimee had a very straightforward approach to her personal challenge. She started by writing a letter to the East London SPCA. In this letter, she said she knew that animals need all the love, care and support that they can get.

She further expressed wanting to adopt every animal there, but knew her parents couldn’t allow that, but did hope that she could raise a lot of money for the SPCA.

Aimee then wrote to her local SPAR, Nahoon SPAR, and requested permission to fundraise at their entrance.

Her proud dad, James Rautenbach, shared with us that Nahoon SPAR was overwhelmingly positive in their support and even donated a number of bags and tins of dog food.

On Saturday, 28 March 2026, Aimee, with the support of her Akela from 1st Vincent Cubs and a fellow Cub, ran a fundraising drive for two hours at the store.

“She was completely bowled over by the kindness and generosity of so many ordinary South Africans who rallied together to donate money and dog and cat food. Folks out on a quick shopping trip took time to engage politely with her and her fellow Cub, and they generously donated food and money,” James said.

Two hours later, Aimee left the Spar with a boot full of pet food, a tub full of donations and a satisfied smile on her face!

On 2 April, at the start of the Easter Weekend, Aimee was able to visit the East London SPCA for the formal handing over of the R2,000 and food that were collected.

“This was an apt time as she was sharing the fruits of her selfless act at a time when we remember the ultimate selfless act.”

Overcome with gratitude, the SPCA thanked Aimee for considering their organisation.

“Your kindness, dedication, and compassion for our animals do not go unnoticed — we are so grateful for the time, effort, and love you poured into this initiative. Well done, Aimee, on your excellent and selfless service and for being so kind to our furry friends. Well done to all the shoppers who took time to heed the call from a 10-year-old Cub to be kind to those who cannot speak for themselves.

“A special thank you as well to Nahoon SPAR for kindly allowing Aimee to host her campaign on your premises. Your support plays a vital role in helping us care for animals in need. Together, you are making a real and meaningful impact in the lives of our furry friends.”

Aimee’s hard work truly paid off. We join the SPCA in celebrating and applauding this young changemaker for her initiative, her kindness, and the wonderful example she has set for us all!
