Hard work earned Shaylee Koekemoer a seat on an overseas academic tour. Now, her family is rallying with everything they’ve got to make sure she makes it to that boarding gate.
Alberton, South Africa (23 April 2026) – Shaylee Koekemoer’s academic discipline has paid off. The Alberton High School learner has been selected for an overseas academic tour in December 2026… a dream built on years of study and sacrifice.
“When she found out she had been selected, the excitement and pride in her eyes was something I will never forget,” Shaylee’s proud mom, Belinda Volschenk, recalls the moment they heard the news.
“As her mom, all I want is to see her experience the world she has worked so hard to be part of.”
Shaylee dreams big, not just for herself, but for the future she hopes to build.
In hopes of securing this international opportunity, which comes at a cost of R59,990, Shaylee and her mother have been working, baking and raffling hard to try to raise the funds required to make it abroad, where she will get to grow, learn, and experience the world in a way that will shape her future.
While the family is currently facing difficult financial challenges, they are rallying tirelessly to make this dream a reality for Shaylee. Over the past few months, they have organised raffle competitions, sold home-baked treats, and hosted small events from their home – all in an effort to raise the necessary funds.
They are currently planning a Family Fun Day in honour of Shaylee’s Academic Tour.
“We have secured a venue, and now we’re looking to bring this special day to life with the help of our amazing community. The event date will be confirmed soon,” Belinda said.
Knowing how hard her daughter has worked to earn this fuels Belinda’s determination to keep going.
“As the sole provider, I am doing everything I can just to keep things going, but despite this, we refuse to give up on Shaylee’s dream. We have been incredibly grateful for the support from our friends, supporters, and community, who have already shown such kindness and generosity toward Shaylee’s journey. Their encouragement has meant more than we can express.”
