South Africa’s senior and junior gymnasts are competing in Cameroon this week following strong performances at national trials.

Yaounde, Cameroon (23 April 2026) – South Africa’s Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) teams are in action this week at the African Gymnastics Championships 2026, with both the senior and junior squads stepping onto the continental stage in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The teams now have the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best gymnasts on the continent. It’s a chance to gain experience, adapt to a new environment, and represent South Africa at a high-performance level.

Head Coach for Senior Olympic WAG, Leeland Christian, believes the group has arrived well prepared following a strong showing at trials.

“We are incredibly proud of the dedication and performance of our gymnasts. Competing at the African Championships offers them not just international exposure, but the chance to test themselves under new pressures, learn from different competitors, and grow both as gymnasts and as young leaders representing South Africa on a continental stage.”

Alongside experienced athletes, several newcomers are also getting their first taste of continental competition. Ilse Pelser highlights the balance within the squad and the work done behind the scenes to prepare them.

“The commitment from the coaching and judging teams has been outstanding,” she adds. “The gymnasts are ready to bring energy, precision, and national pride to the floor… For many of our Junior team, this will be their first experience on a continental stage. The African Championships provide an incredible opportunity to gain confidence, adapt to different competitive environments, and learn lessons that will carry them forward for years to come.”

With competition now underway, the focus shifts to competing as the team looks to translate months of preparation into performances on the floor.
