GetGo Fund’s new #GetGoTheDistance initiative encourages people to turn runs, walks and fitness challenges into fundraising support for schools and learners in need.

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2026) – As thousands of South Africans lace up for races, weekly run clubs and personal fitness goals, a Cape Town-based crowdfunding platform is encouraging people to turn those kilometres into something bigger than themselves.

GetGo Fund, an education-focused crowdfunding platform launched to help schools, learners and communities access funding support more transparently, has introduced a new public initiative called #GetGoTheDistance.

The campaign encourages people to link their own movement goals to education causes listed on the platform.

Participants can choose a campaign, pledge their challenge, share it with family and friends, and raise donations to support schools or learners facing financial obstacles.

Already, several campaigns on the platform are gaining attention. One Cape Town fundraiser is helping Masiphumelele High School retain a teacher supporting learners both inside and outside the classroom, while another campaign is raising funds for a learner at Capella House to continue her education in an environment where she is thriving.

Together, the campaigns highlight the different ways communities can support education. All from helping schools strengthen resources to ensuring individual learners remain in the classroom.

“Being part of GetGo Fund at this stage is incredibly meaningful because we are building something that speaks directly to need and possibility.”

The campaign also reflects a growing shift in how everyday people are engaging with giving. Instead of relying only on major organisations or once-off donations, the platform creates a more direct and visible way for communities to support education causes one challenge, one pledge and one donation at a time.

“There are so many South Africans who want to help, but they are often unsure where to begin or whether their contribution will truly be felt. #GetGoTheDistance gives people a heartfelt starting point. Take the energy you are already putting into your own goal, and let it help move a learner or a school forward too.”

And while race season may have inspired the idea, organisers say the initiative is not only for seasoned runners.

Whether someone is training for a marathon, joining a local run club, walking with friends or simply trying to become more active, the goal is to turn personal progress into support for someone else’s future.
