A crucial halftime message from coach Johan Ackermann helped spark a comeback that secured one of the most memorable victories of the Bulls’ season.
Edinburgh, Scotland (08 June 2026) – The Bulls are heading back to South Africa with a place in the United Rugby Championship final secured after producing one of the most remarkable comebacks in the team’s recent history.
Trailing by 18 points and reduced to 13 men after two first-half yellow cards, the Pretoria side looked to be in serious trouble against the defending champions, Glasgow Warriors, at Murrayfield on Saturday. But instead of folding under pressure, the Bulls showed immense character to fight their way back for a dramatic 22-21 victory.
The hosts raced into a commanding 21-3 lead during a dominant opening spell as the Bulls battled disciplinary issues and struggled to contain Glasgow’s attacking. By halftime, however, the deficit had been reduced to 21-10, giving the visitors a foothold in the contest.

For coach Johan Ackermann, the message during the break was simple.
“My only thing was, guys, we’re 21-10 down. I only ask one thing: let’s go score the first try. If we score the first try and it’s 21-17, then we’re in the game. And the boys responded to that.”
The Bulls emerged from the sheds with renewed belief. When the final whistle sounded, the Bulls had completed a comeback few would have predicted after the opening 30 minutes. Ackermann admitted the result ranks among the finest victories of his coaching career.
“This must be right at the top. The comeback is special … because they were really playing good rugby. This is probably one of the best victories I’ve had, just the character that the guys showed.”
The coach was quick to praise the players who stood tall when the pressure was at its highest. Klopper’s impact was significant, while hooker Johan Grobbelaar marked his 150th appearance with a massive performance. Captain Marcell Coetzee also led from the front in his 100th match for the franchise, while the replacements made important contributions when called upon.
The victory is made even more remarkable considering the difficult patch the Bulls endured earlier this season. At one stage, a place in the final looked unlikely, making this turnaround all the more satisfying.
The Bulls now return home knowing they are one win away from URC glory.
