If viral campaigning were an Olympic sport, Helen Zille would be in medal contention. Her latest stop on the campaign trail saw her trading potholes for playlists.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 June 2026)Helen Zille has done many things over the course of her political career. Mayor. Premier. Party leader. Public commentator. But if 2026 has taught South Africans anything, it’s that she is also willing to throw herself into a campaign with a level of commitment that few could have predicted… and absolutely nobody could ignore.

Over the past few months, we’ve been following Helen’s campaign trail through a series of increasingly viral videos and social media posts that have turned everyday frustrations for Johannesburg residents into content that people can’t stop talking about. Rather than simply pointing out the city’s challenges, she has leaned into them with a healthy dose of humour and a willingness to get involved. She’s directed traffic at malfunctioning traffic lights. She’s snorkelled through water-filled craters. She’s rowed through flooded streets. And, because apparently there are no limits anymore, she even found herself ziplining across a sinkhole.

Love her or disagree with her politics, one thing is undeniable: people are watching.

And now, we have a new episode.

Ahead of Youth Day, Helen swapped campaign props for a DJ booth at Lock, Stock & Beer in Fourways.

Yes, you read that correctly. Gogo is DJing now.

Helen joined Lady Lea at the popular beer garden and gourmet kitchen on Saturday for what appeared to be a surprise set. Photos shared online show a packed crowd, plenty of smiles and a scene that looked more music festival than political campaign.

The internet, naturally, had plenty to say.

“Often wonder if Helen got someone from Nandos ads in her campaign these days cos JOH IM LOVING IT!”

“Jirre this old lady just became an instant G.O.A.T…. even got us suffering FOMO”

“This jhb candidate thing is turning you into a grooviest”

The comments section has become almost as entertaining as the videos and posts themselves, with South Africans debating whether these stunts are clever campaigning, brilliant marketing or simply the result of someone having a lot more fun than most people expected. What makes it all particularly fascinating is that every post manages to spark conversation about issues affecting residents while simultaneously giving social media something to laugh about. The broken infrastructure is real, the frustrations are real but so is the creativity behind finding new ways to get people talking.

As for the DJ appearance, there may be more to come. The social media teaser accompanying the event ended with the words “dropping soon”, which has left followers wondering what exactly is next.

Another video? A campaign anthem? A full DJ collaboration? At this point, nothing seems impossible.

Whatever comes next, Helen Zille has found a way to keep South Africans commenting and sharing. In a country where grabbing attention is no easy task, she has managed to turn potholes, sinkholes, traffic lights and now turntables into must-see content. And if the reaction online is anything to go by, plenty of people are already waiting for the next track to drop.
