Watch: Helen Zille Rowed Her Boat… And Suddenly There’s Action

Just when you thought Helen Zille had done it all, she climbed into a boat and started rowing down a flooded Joburg street… and within hours, the problem was being fixed.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 April 2026) – Helen Zille is trending again… and we don’t think Joburg (or South Africa) saw this one coming!

Just two weeks after climbing into a pothole with a snorkel and going wildly viral, she’s back in the headlines, this time swapping flippers for a makeshift rowing session on a flooded street. And while it may look like pure theatre on the surface, something interesting is happening beneath it all… things are actually getting fixed.

On the 30th of March, Helen posted a video to her social media, wearing a wetsuit, swim cap and snorkel, braving muddy water for a quick dip. In the video, she explained that the pothole was caused by a burst pipe that had been left unattended for 3 years.

“Neighbours can’t get out of their driveways, people have asked for the council to come and fix it,” she said.

“They came and fixed it with a front-end loader and burst the pipe again. This is what people have to live with in the city of Johannesburg.”

The clip spread like wildfire, sparking conversation, debate and, most importantly, action. The city’s current mayor, Dada Morero, stepped in, had the pothole filled and even filmed his own response, urging children not to imitate the stunt. But as many residents know all too well, the fix didn’t last, with reports surfacing shortly after that the pipe had burst again.

And now, just a couple of weeks later, Helen is back at it… this time taking on a long-standing flooded street that has allegedly been an issue for 6 years due to a blocked drain. Instead of a speech or a statement, she climbed into a small boat and started rowing through the water, turning frustration into something oddly brilliant and undeniably entertaining.

Social media did what social media does best… it reacted instantly, loudly and with plenty of humour.

“There are only two words, ‘kak’ funny. Helen you are very loved!”

“Not just talking about the current state of governance, but actually showing and exposing it!”

“I didn’t know this other side of madam Zille, she can make you laugh while telling the truth🤣🤣🤣”

“I love how Zille is Campaigning 🤣🤣but unfortunately she can’t get my vote. I can’t allow Joburg to get super expensive like Cape Town but lovely to see this🤣”

But here’s where it gets interesting… a couple of hours after the video went live, the city showed up to fix the problem. After 6 years of frustration, something finally moved.

And just like that, what many are now calling the “Gogo Effect” feels very real.

Yes, it’s funny. Yes, it’s a little outrageous. But it’s also shining a spotlight on issues that have been ignored for far too long, and somehow, it’s turning attention into action.

So now the big question is… where to next?

If the last two weeks are anything to go by, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing another unexpected “stunt” soon. And if that’s what it takes to get things moving, then maybe this blend of humour, visibility and a little bit of chaos is exactly what the city needed.
