Bandit – the only rescue dog in his litter who was not adopted early on – has finally found not just a home, but a calling to bring joy to the homeless.
Khayelitsha, South Africa (18 June 2026) – While his brothers, sisters, and even his own mother found families and moved on to their forever homes, this gentle boy stayed behind at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter in Khayelitsha – sitting, waiting, wishing that someone would eventually choose him. For two years, nobody did.
Bandit had arrived at Mdzananda as a tiny puppy, part of a litter that was surrendered when their owners could no longer afford to care for them. It was a heartbreaking start, but the team at Mdzananda refused to give up on him, and as it turns out, the universe had something very special in mind.
When the Night Shelter in Somerset West reached out to Mdzananda looking for a new therapy pet – their two beloved resident dogs had both sadly passed away from old age, leaving a hole in the hearts of everyone living there – a glimmer of hope shined down on Bandit.
Mdzananda’s General Manager and Kennel Manager drove him over for a meet-and-greet. He was a little cautious at first. Then, the way doggies always seem to do when they’re where they’re meant to be, he relaxed and settled in.
“He soon snuggled up with someone, lay down, and made himself at home,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda.
And that was that. Two weeks in, Bandit is right at home. He has two beds to choose from, a collection of toys, good food, and more affection than he probably knows what to do with. He spends his days playing, cuddling, and doing what he was always meant to do. He brings comfort and companionship to adults who have very little else, and he absolutely loves it.
“He has not only found his forever home, but he has truly found his purpose in life,” says Marcelle, “bringing joy to people who have fallen on difficult times.”
His two years of waiting for love are over now, and he’ll make up for all the missed time.
“We are truly happy with this successful homing,” says Samantha Mann, General Manager at Mdzananda, “and can only wish for the same happy endings for all our dogs and cats up for adoption.”

Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has, for three decades, been Khayelitsha’s only access to veterinary care for companion animals.
