Proteas Take Big Step Towards World Cup Knockout Stages

Marizanne Kapp stars with bat and ball as South Africa strengthened their chances of reaching the T20 World Cup knockout stages in England.

England (22 June 2026) – Proteas Women took another important step towards their quest for a T20 World Cup title on Sunday, producing a strong performance to defeat India and strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stages in England.

The victory comes at a time when several members of the squad are also being recognised among the country’s top performers. Marizanne Kapp, Nadine de Klerk, Sune Luus, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Laura Wolvaardt have all been nominated for the CSA Women’s Player of the Year award, with the winners set to be announced at the CSA Awards at the Sandton Convention Centre on 16 July.

And if Sunday’s performance proved those nominations are thoroughly deserved.

Kapp once again showed why she remains one of the most influential cricketers in world cricket, delivering a match-winning all-round display when her side needed it most. The experienced all-rounder first helped restrict India with the ball before producing an unbeaten 81 off just 45 deliveries to guide South Africa home in a tense chase.

The result was a welcome boost for the Proteas Women, who arrived at the tournament determined to finally go one step further after finishing runners-up at the previous two ICC Women’s T20 World Cups. Having already reached three consecutive ICC finals across formats, South Africa continue to prove they belong among the world’s elite sides.

The chase was far from straightforward. Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits laid the foundation, but wickets at key moments ensured the pressure remained firmly on the Proteas.

South Africa eventually crossed the line with five balls to spare, finishing on 161/4 to keep their World Cup campaign firmly on track.

With the business end of the tournament drawing closer, the Proteas Women will hope the momentum from this victory can carry them deeper into the competition as they continue their pursuit of the trophy

The timing could hardly be better. As several Proteas stars await the CSA Awards next month.
