Honest strangers, young heroes, second chances and history-making moments all found a place in this week’s newsletter. Here’s a look at the stories South Africa fell in love with.
South Africa (27 June 2026) – If you had looked at the country just a week ago, you might have thought we were carrying a little more frustration than usual. Then football happened. More importantly, hope happened.
After a heartbreaking start to their FIFA World Cup campaign, many had already written Bafana Bafana off. The criticism came quickly, the doubts came even quicker, and social media did what social media so often does. But this team refused to let one difficult result define them. They kept showing up, kept believing and kept doing the work.
Then history happened.
For the first time ever, Bafana Bafana have reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, and for a few glorious days it felt like every conversation in South Africa carried a little more excitement. Strangers smiled at one another. Offices buzzed with football chatter. Families celebrated together. We all stood a little taller.

It was a wonderful reminder that happiness can spread just as quickly as negativity when we allow it to.

One story that reminded us just how much honesty still exists came from Fourways Mall, where beloved South African musician PJ Powers accidentally left her car unlocked… with the door standing wide open.
It could have ended in disaster but security officer Hector Gumanazi chose something far more powerful. He stood guard over the vehicle until PJ returned, making sure everything remained exactly where she had left it, right down to an expensive pair of sunglasses sitting in plain sight. PJ called him “an asset to your country”, and it’s hard to disagree.
His simple act of integrity turned an anxious moment into one worth celebrating. And one that went viral across social media, with South Africans calling Hector a hero!
Three young South Africans from Wyebank also reminded us that kindness has no age limit. When Luyanda, Manda and Mnqoa discovered a stranded tortoise, they didn’t walk past it. They carried the little creature all the way to the Kloof and Highway SPCA so it could receive the care it needed.
“Luyanda, Manda and Mnqoa had walked all the way from Wyebank to bring the tortoise to the SPCA because they knew it would be safe with us,” the SPCA said.
The little creature has since been taken to the Centre of Rehabilitation and Wildlife (CROW), where it will receive the care it needs.
And the three young heroes? They were given a lift back home by SPCA staff so they didn’t have to make the long journey back in the sun.
“The Kloof and Highway SPCA would like to say a very big thank you to these three young men who kept the tortoise safe and made such a long trip to help. You are true animal heroes, and we are so grateful for your kindness.”
Their journey wasn’t short but they never complained. Instead, they made sure an animal that couldn’t help itself was given a second chance.
Then there was Uncle George. After Sethabile Ndwandwe became lost in an unfamiliar part of Cape Town, George noticed she needed help.
He didn’t simply point her towards the bus station before continuing with his day. He stayed with her for almost three hours, making sure she was safe until her bus finally arrived. They even shared a meal while they waited.
“He waited with me from 14:22 to 17h00 kwaze kwafika iBus (until the bus arrived because he was worried about my safety,” she shared.
His kindness touched thousands of people online, reminding us that looking after one another doesn’t always require grand gestures. Often, it simply requires showing up for someone when they need it most.
Our SPAR Hero of the Week is proving that knowledge really can save lives.
Cancer survivor Torsten Koehler, founder of the Love Your Nuts Foundation, is developing a gaming app designed to teach young people about cancer awareness, early detection and healthy choices in a way that actually connects with them. Rather than relying on traditional awareness campaigns, the app will use games, quizzes and interactive challenges to help young South Africans recognise warning signs and understand when it’s time to seek medical advice.
It’s an innovative idea with the potential to educate an entire generation while making conversations about health easier to have.
Our Kids’ Storybook this week introduces readers to Lucky Maebela, whose journey is one every child should hear.
By day, Lucky worked as a gardener on a university campus, helping beautiful gardens flourish. By night, he became a student, working tirelessly towards the education he had dreamed of despite enormous setbacks and hardships.
His story reminds young readers that dreams don’t disappear simply because life becomes difficult. Sometimes they just take a little longer to bloom.
And finally, our weekly OnePlan Pawsitive Story brought an important update on Bobby, the severely neglected dog whose heartbreaking condition shocked South Africa last year.
The NSPCA has confirmed that a second accused has now been added to the animal cruelty case, an important step as justice continues to unfold. But perhaps the happiest part of Bobby’s story has already happened. She is healthy, deeply loved and living the wonderful life she always deserved with a family who adores her.
For now, while the legal case continues, comfort is taken in knowing that Bobby’s story did not end with the video that shocked us all. Instead it became a story of rescue, recovery and a second chance with the best family.
These are only a handful of the stories that filled this week’s newsletter but together they capture something that numbers and headlines often miss. Good news doesn’t ignore life’s challenges. It simply reminds us that alongside every difficult headline are people choosing honesty over opportunity, compassion over convenience, courage over fear and hope over despair.
If Bafana Bafana reminded us of anything this week, it’s that one result never tells the whole story.
The same is true of South Africa.
And that’s why we’ll keep telling the good ones.
