The Gardener Who Grew His Dreams

Every day, Lucky helped flowers and trees grow, but he was also growing something even bigger… his own dreams.

A pair of brown overalls and a backpack full of books might not seem like a magical combination, but for Lucky Maebela, they tell the story of a dream that refused to give up.

Every day, students walked across the beautiful grounds of a university, passing flowerbeds, green lawns and carefully tended gardens. Many of them knew the gardener who worked there. His name was Lucky and he was often seen caring for the plants and making the campus look welcoming for everyone.

What many people didn’t know was that when his gardening work was done, Lucky would pick up his books and head off to study. While he helped gardens grow during the day, he was also helping his own future grow, one lesson at a time.

When Lucky was young, growing up in a small village in Limpopo, he believed education could open doors to a brighter future. Getting to school was not always easy. Every day, he travelled a long distance to attend classes, but he kept going because he knew learning was important.

As he got older, Lucky moved away from home, hoping to find work and create new opportunities for himself. But life took an unexpected turn when he was badly injured in an accident. The accident left scars on his face and people often judged him before they even got to know him.

That hurt more than most people realised.

Instead of seeing the kind and determined person he was, many only noticed the scars. Lucky felt sad and disappointed, but he refused to let other people decide what his future would look like.

After returning home to recover, he made a brave choice. He went back to school.

At 23 years old, he sat in classrooms alongside younger students and worked hard to improve his marks. It was not always easy being older than many of his classmates but Lucky stayed focused on his goal. He even started a small business with his younger brother to help earn money while continuing his studies.

Then one day, a social worker noticed something special about him.

The social worker could see that Lucky was determined to build a better future, and he encouraged him to apply to university. Together, they completed applications and hoped for the best.

When Lucky received his acceptance letter, it felt like a giant door swinging open.

Soon he was studying subjects that helped him better understand people, families and communities. He discovered a love for learning and found a place where he felt accepted and supported. To help pay his way, Lucky took a job as a gardener on campus. Each day became a balancing act between work and study, but he never lost sight of his dreams.

And his dreams are big.

Lucky hopes to continue learning for many years and one day earn the highest university qualification possible. But he is not only thinking about himself. Because he knows what it feels like to be overlooked, he wants to help other young people believe in themselves too.

That is why he started a foundation designed to encourage education, support young people and help those who may be struggling through difficult times.

So the next time you see someone, remember that there is always more to their story than meets the eye. Just ask Lucky. Behind the gardener’s gloves is a student, a dreamer and someone helping others grow right alongside him.
