Needle in a haystack luck! A ranger, who was not even on the lookout for a set of missing keys, found them off the side of a Table Mountain trail and made sure they were returned safely back to Greta.
Cape Town, South Africa (14 July 2026) – Greta had just finished a ‘mega hectic’ hike up Platteklip Gorge on Table Mountain when she reached for her car key and found… nothing. Somewhere along the trail, it had worked itself loose from her lanyard and vanished.
Her hiking buddy, Jo, offered to go back and look for it. Greta, ever the realist, told her not to bother – it would be like finding a needle in a haystack, and where would you even start?
“Just to add that eternal optimist, my fellow hiker, friend Jo Trimalay Mills, had offered to look for my missing car key and I sceptically replied that would be pointless”
Jo gave Greta a lift home, where she dug up her spare key. When she got back to her car, there was a note tucked under the windscreen wiper…

“SANParks ranger Tulzi found my key approx 500m from start of Platteklip Gorge, to side of path nogal.”
A SANParks ranger named Tulzi had found her key roughly 500 metres from the start of the gorge, just off to the side of the path, and left the note for her to find.
Greta hadn’t told a single ranger or fellow hiker (other than Jo) that the key was even missing. Tulzi just spotted it, picked it up, matched it with the correct car, and made sure it found its way home.
She never got a photo with him, but wanted to say – good man, Tulzi!
“Brilliant luck and truly needle in haystack stuff.” shares Greta.
