After rebuilding his life, the South African obstacle course racer is now chasing a world championship dream in Beijing
Durban, South Africa (17 July 2026)- Life looks very different for Warren Whitson today than it did eight years ago.
After overcoming addiction and completely rebuilding his life, the South African obstacle course racer has earned the opportunity to represent the country at the UIPM OCR World Championships, which will be held in Beijing, China, from 1 to 6 September 2026.
The achievement follows an impressive performance at the 2026 UIPM South African OCR Championships, where Warren claimed third place and secured his spot in the national team.
For him, qualifying for the world championships is about far more than sport. It’s the result of years of discipline.
Today, he’s not only an athlete chasing big goals, but also a husband and father who has dedicated himself to building a new future. Countless early mornings, demanding training sessions and unwavering commitment have helped turn a once-distant dream into reality.
Now, he’s preparing to test himself against the world’s best obstacle course racers.
There’s just one challenge standing in the way.
As a self-funded athlete, Warren is responsible for covering every cost associated with competing in Beijing, from flights and accommodation to competition and travel expenses. He’s now appealing to South Africans to help him make the trip.
Every donation, whether big or small, will help bring him closer to pulling on the green and gold and proudly flying the South African flag on the international stage.
Warren’s journey is proof that setbacks don’t have to be the end of the story. Sometimes, they’re simply the beginning of an even greater one.
