This brings vital respiratory support to some of the hospital’s smallest and most vulnerable patients.
Cape Town, South Africa (31 July 2026) – The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust has donated two state-of-the-art Dräger Babylog neonatal ventilators to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where they will help care for premature and critically ill newborns.
The advanced ventilators provide specialised respiratory support for babies whose lungs are not yet strong enough to breathe on their own, giving them a better chance of recovery during those critical first days and weeks of life.
The donation comes shortly after the Trust’s chairperson, Prof Pierre Goussard, completed the Swiss Stoos mountain race, taking on the challenge to raise funds for much-needed paediatric medical equipment. His champion effort shined a light on the need for specialised equipment makes a life-changing difference for young patients.
This year also marks the Trust’s 25th anniversary, a milestone in decades of helping meet the needs of vulnerable children receiving public healthcare at Tygerberg Hospital. Beyond funding lifesaving equipment like ventilators, it also supports specialised medical care, education for children receiving long-term treatment, and assistance for families navigating difficult circumstances.
As per its most recent annual report, the Trust’s donations have also funded a suite of other critical equipment including two SERVO-n neonatal ventilators, cooling therapy units for babies with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, a nitric oxide delivery system, a paediatric bronchovideoscope, and a gastroscope for the Paediatric Surgery unit.
It has also supported the renovation of the hospital’s Adolescent Psychiatric Ward, a full makeover of the Nuclear Medicine children’s waiting room, and ongoing funding for teachers, therapists and resources at the Tygerberg Hospital School, which serves 45 to 50 hospitalised learners every day.
Beyond that, over R1.1 million in donations of clothing, toys, books and care packages were made!
