There’s a learner at Augrabies Akademie who doesn’t wear a uniform and is partial to stealing sandwiches…but he’s also the most popular guy in school and his attendance record is shining!

Northern Cape, South Africa (03 September 2026) – Going to school voluntarily perhaps isn’t every learner’s idea of a good time, but Bobby is the opposite. He’s a star pupil. His school wrote to us about him, because he is that special!

The 10-year-old rescue dog has become Augrabies Akademie’s four-legged learner, mascot and general school-going character after deciding some time ago that if his ‘little sisters’ were heading off to class, he was going, too.

Bobby’s relationship with the small Northern Cape school actually began even before that. He would pop in for concerts and fun days here and there, as one does when you are a neighbourhood dog with places to be.

“Bobby is 10 jaar oud, en stap al ‘n lang pad saam met Augrabies Akademie. Hy het van die begin af nog altyd kom kuier met ‘n konsert of ‘n prettige dag, maar vanaf sy ‘sussies’ begin skool loop het kan sy ouers hom nie by die skool weg hou nie – al sluit hulle hom toe (hy spring sommer bo-oor die hek!). Hy loop self skool toe en terug elke dag.” the school shares.

When the girls in his family started attending Augrabies Akademie themselves, his visits became…more frequent. His parents tried keeping him at home, but Bobby fully disagreed.

These days, he walks there and back all by himself. He’s there on photo day. He’s even there for assembly! Seeing as he has put in the attendance, he has developed his own school routine. There is sun basking to be done, car boots to jump into when he fancies a lift home, and, occasionally, there is an unattended school sandwich with ‘Bobby’ written all over it.

“Bobby geniet dit om in die son te lê en bak, in mense se bagasiebak te spring vir ‘n geleentheid huis toe en ‘n skoolbroodjie te steel so elke nou en dan. Hy is al die laaste paar jaar deel van ons skoolfotos.” the school shares.

Bobby’s attendance record even stretches into weekends. On Sundays, he heads to church right next door to the school.

For all his current adventures, his story started somewhere quite different. Bobby is a rescue who came from difficult circumstances. He has come a very long way since finding his family…and his school. Even if he is stealing sandwiches – this good boy gets no demerits.

Augrabies Akademie shared Bobby’s story with Good Things Guy because of the happiness he brings to the people around him every day. Perhaps we all need school and work mascots. Everything is better with pups around!
