Despite being the sole volunteer to show up for a project at Love uMngeni yesterday, Sushi Mahadave enthusiastically poured her heart into nearly three hours of work that will benefit local schoolchildren.

Howick, South Africa (09 October 2026) – While many hands make light work, sometimes just one person is enough to make a meaningful difference where it is needed most.

When Sushi Mahadave arrived at Love uMngeni on Wednesday after learning the team would be preparing learning resource packs for school children, she was eager to lend a helping hand. What she didn’t anticipate, though, was that she would be the only volunteer who showed up.

But instead of being discouraged, Sushi simply asked what needed to be done and got straight to work!

Sushi is no ordinary volunteer. A retired engineering technician who has hiked Mount Everest and travelled the world, she has lived an extraordinary life. She knits beanies for premature babies, has a beautiful heart for children and family, and is passionate about rescuing and protecting dogs.

Yesterday morning she chose to give of her time and extend her kindness to Love uMngeni. For nearly three hours, Sushi cut out countless printouts, all while sharing snippets of her remarkable story. By the end of the morning, a quarter of the work had been completed – by one person!

It just goes to show that real change doesn’t always need a crowd. Sometimes all it takes is one willing person who is ready to show up and lend a hand.

“Sushi reminded us of the incredible power of “the one” – the person who raises their hand, steps up, and simply shows up,” the organisation said.

“Thank you, Sushi, for reminding us that one person really can make a difference.”
