What if education was not about making every learner fit the same mould, but about helping young people find where they can be brilliant? Through its diverse vocational training programmes, Weskus School empowers students to unlock their potential and pursue their own unique paths to success.

Saldanha Bay, South Africa (09 October 2026) – We all have different skills, talents and passions – something Weskus School of Skills in Saldanha Bay is allowing young learners to truly tap into.

Through vocational training, the school offers young people a different path to discovering what they are good at, to develop practical skills and to prepare for life beyond school. For learners who may not find their place in a traditional academic setting, Weskus offers another way to discover what they are good at and where that could take them.

Some learn hospitality. Others work in agriculture, manufacturing, boat building and a range of other vocational areas. Over four years, they develop practical and life skills that can help them move into the world of work.

According to principal Delmarie Engelbrecht, around 98% of learners complete the full four-year programme. At the end of the four-year programme, they identify three workplaces where they would like to work, in order of preference. This helps connect their training to the opportunities they hope to pursue.

Launching Students into the Hospitality Industry

This week, Weskus unveiled a newly refurbished training kitchen – marking an exciting new chapter for the school and giving learners the chance to practise their skills in a professional environment and prepare for life beyond the classroom.

The new and improved facility was made possible by Breadline Africa with funding from Anthem, an independent power producer with operations along the West Coast.

The upgraded, industry-standard kitchen can accommodate up to 25 learners at a time, giving them a professional environment in which to practise their skills and prepare for the workplace.

“We are proud that Breadline Africa could contribute to something that will make a real difference to these learners and their futures,” Breadline Africa shared.

“Yesterday [08 October] was a wonderful reminder that sometimes, finding the right path starts with being given the chance to try something different.”

Weskus School of Skills challenges the idea that every learner must follow the same path to succeed. For Delmarie, the kitchen offers learners “a professional stage” where they can practise their skills, gain confidence and prepare for the hospitality industry.
