South Africa knew him as Arthur, the abandoned Frenchie found tied to a pole in the rain. His real name is Yo-Yo, and his family had been calling shelters and vets the whole time, looking for him.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 October 2026) – This surprising turn of events is proof that hope can survive even the grimmest hours. A small dog who commanded national attention has returned to the hands that raised him. Known initially to thousands across South Africa as ‘Arthur,’ the pup’s trail took many twists and turns before bringing him back home…

The mystery began when a little Frenchie was discovered abandoned in the rain, tied to a pole by his leash in Table View. He was distressed and shivering. Thankfully, a caring member of the public took him in while animal rescue organisations were alerted.

What nobody knew at the time was that a horrifying tragedy had unfolded just hours earlier…

The little dog had been out on a routine walk with his devoted owner when they were victims of a brutal attack. The owner was critically injured and rushed to the ICU, leaving a traumatised little soul unaccounted for in the chaos.

When the owner’s ex-partner learned of the tragedy, he rushed all the way from Durban to Cape Town to help. He began a desperate, non-stop search across local shelters and veterinary clinics to find the cherished boy. How the pup ended up tied to a pole remains uncertain, but his family never stopped looking for him.

As their search was underway, Arthur’s condition deteriorated. The sheer trauma of witnessing the attack and spending a freezing night outdoors pushed his body into overwhelm and distress.

The good Samaritan holding him noticed he was hyperventilating and suffering due to extreme stress and overheating. When advice from another group suggested giving him an antihistamine and waiting until morning, the team at English and French Bulldog Rescue SA recognised the immediate danger.

“We immediately told her to take him to an afterhour vet (Vet-Clin) and made arrangements for him to be seen. The vet immediately sprang into action to cool him down as Arthur was obviously overheating due to stress…” the organisation shares. “The vet advised it would have been dangerous to give him an allergex, and it would not have helped with the overheating. If Arthur was not taken to the vet, he would have died.”

Once Arthur was stable, with his vet bill covered by the organisation, rescue team member Jacques made the journey to collect him.

As the little Frenchie slowly began to recover in their care, a surprising discovery unfolded. It turned out that the breeder that rescue organisations had initially tracked down, had accidentally mixed up puppy identities, and the real ‘Arthur’ was living happily at home!

The rescue team soon received a message that would solve the puzzle once and for all. This brave survivor had a name of his own. Yo-Yo…

The breakthrough came when Yo-Yo’s searching family got in touch with the rescue.

“I have been calling around for days trying to find this child,” the emotional message read. “I have reported him as lost to the SPCA and contacted animal hospital blouberg – who told me to contact you… I am looking for our Yo-Yo”

Alongside their message were puppy photos showing Yo-Yo aka Arthur’s unmistakable one-floppy, one-upright ears. When his human family member arrived to collect him, the reunion was magical. The relief and joy on their faces said it all.

“When we realized Yo-Yo could go home to a family who loves him and have been searching for days, to people he knows and loves – it gave us goosebumps. It made every call, every message, every effort worth while. Because after all that, Yo-Yo deserved a miracle. And tonight as one of the humans he loves so much, picked him up and held him close, the smiles on both their faces said it all… what a wonderful outcome!” shares the organisation.

Yo-Yo will be eagerly waiting at home for his owner, ready to offer the comfort and unconditional love that only a faithful four-legged best friend can give!

“Their story is a reminder that you can not always jump to conclusions, that sometimes that lost dog is loved more than anything in the world and that sometimes the owners are not the ones at fault.” the rescue shares.

“Yo-Yo, you will probably always be fondly remembered as ‘our’ Arthur, the country’s Arthur. Your little face is one we will never forget. Enjoy your family, sweetheart, we are over the moon for you! You goodest boy, you!”
