Gonubie has added one more charming work of wildlife art to its reservoir wall, brought to life by local artist Nathan Sanan.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (21 October 2026) – A sunbasking dassie painted by talented local street artist Nathan Sanan now sits on the Gonubie reservoir wall!

Adding an extra-special touch of magic to the town mural, the young winners of this year’s Project Yeyethu colouring competition were invited to roll up their sleeves and help Nathan leave a lasting mark on their very own neighbourhood.

“While painting this I realised I want to be as content as a sunbasking dassie on rock. Really happy how this little fella has turned out as an addition to the Gonubie reservoir.” writes Nathan. “The Debbie and Suné driven Project Yeyethu was a great success this year. A special thank you to them for making it happen…”

The cheerful dassie now joins the existing library of public art on the reservoir, including the majestic grey crowned crane and the iconic humpback whale.

The town murals are made possible through Project Yeyethu, a community initiative founded by Sune Moolman and Debbie Theron of Pam Golding Properties East London.

The duo have set out to uplift local spaces, nurture local talent, and spread the love for visual arts. We are big fans of local change-makers who make their hometowns shine!

In addition to the public murals, Project Yeyethu hosts community gatherings, including the Project Yeyethu Music Festival held at Thistlewoods. These events bring people together while raising funds for local causes.

Through fundraising and awareness campaigns, the initiative partners with local non-profit organisations to help restore regional wetlands, secure floodplains, and protect local bird populations!

When everyday heroes, artists, young dreamers and townspeople join hands, amazing things can happen in our communities.
