Stop squinting at that little brown bird. Pretoriuskop now has a colour-coded cheat sheet.
Kruger National Park, South Africa (28 October 2026) – Identifying the many bird species spotted around the Pretoriuskop camp area in the Kruger has now become a little easier, thanks to an illustrated poster donated by the SANParks Honorary Rangers.
An incredible 500 bird species have been recorded in the national park, with more than 200 of them seen in Pretoriuskop alone.
The poster documents more than 200 species and uses a colour-coded system to help you quickly identify what type of bird you’re looking at.

Each bird’s name appears on a coloured label that matches one of the habitat or behaviour categories listed in the right-hand guide. Different colours represent groups such as swimmers, waders, raptors, sleepers, favourites, flyers, runners, perchers, suckers (nectar feeders) and seed-eaters.
By matching the colour of a bird’s label to the corresponding colour in the key, you can immediately see the bird’s general lifestyle or feeding behaviour, making it much easier to narrow down an identification while birding!
The poster is illustrated by Faansie Peacock for the FIREFINCH birding app.
It was erected at a prime spot outside the shop at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp in September. Another poster has also gone up at Crocodile Bridge.
