Kindness

‘I could see you needed help.’ Those words meant everything to Louise, who found herself stranded along the side of the road with a flat tyre after an already difficult day. Sometimes your small act of kindness can be someone’s answered prayer.

Cape Town, South Africa (28 October 2026) – Louise Wilkinson was driving her son to work in the early hours when she realised her tyre was going flat. She pulled over, scared and already worn out after an emotional day before.

“This morning, after a particularly emotional day yesterday, I found myself on the side of the road in the early hours with a flat tyre.” she wrote. “I pulled over, feeling frightened, overwhelmed and desperately trying to gather my thoughts.”

She prayed for help and phoned her eldest son, who arranged an Uber for his brother. That left Louise on the roadside with a flat tyre.

Then a young man named Rudi pulled up alongside her. He was probably making his way to work, and likely – just as we all do – had his own thoughts and responsibilities to contend with. Still, he saw Louise, recognised that she needed help, and chose to stop.

Suddenly, Louise had a stranger pumping up her tyre so she could make it to a garage.

When she asked his name, and then why he’d stopped, he said: ‘I could see you needed help.’

“Oh, Rudi. If only you knew how much those words meant to me this morning. You see, we live in a world where it can sometimes feel as though everyone is too busy, too distracted, too caught up in their own lives to notice the person beside them. And then someone like you comes along and reminds us that goodness, compassion and kindness are still very much alive.”

Louise headed for a nearby garage, hoping her tyre would hold. She made it. A gentleman there helped plug the tyre before she was safely on her way again.

“I cried all the way home. Not because of the flat tyre, but because I was so overwhelmed with gratitude.” she wrote, adding: “Gratitude for my sons. Gratitude for the men at the garage who helped me so effortlessly. And especially gratitude for a young man named Rudi, who chose to stop.”

She then posted a thank-you to Rudi in The Village, a South African group on Facebook, in the hope he’d see it.

“We don’t always know what someone is carrying when our paths cross,” she wrote. “We don’t know the tears they cried yesterday, the fears they are facing today, or the prayers they have whispered.”

Louise has a message for the rest of us. We should all be a Rudi.

“Notice people. Stop when you can. Extend kindness without expecting anything in return. You may never know just how profoundly your kindness touches another person’s life.”

Rudi, if you’re reading this, Louise says thank you. Because you chose to stop, a weight was lifted from her shoulders. Sometimes, even the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge impact. Always choose kindness, friends. You never know when it’ll reach someone in the exact moment they need it!
