Graduation day has never looked this adorable! A hospital in Centurion is celebrating NICU babies going home with tiny caps, gowns and lots of love.

If you only have a minute, read this: More than 45 babies have celebrated their very first graduation at Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion! The hospital’s NICU team has introduced an adorable tradition where newborns receive graduation photographs, complete with handmade caps and gowns, before finally going home. Created by the nurses and doctors themselves, the initiative celebrates a huge milestone for families who have spent days, weeks or months waiting to bring their little ones home.

Pretoria, South Africa (02 November 2026) – Graduation day usually involves years of hard work, proud parents, a cap and gown and a photograph that ends up framed somewhere in the family home. But at a hospital in Centurion, the graduates are a little younger than usual. In fact, most of them haven’t even learnt to smile yet! And their graduation ceremonies might just be the cutest thing you see today.

At Netcare Unitas Hospital, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has introduced a beautiful new tradition to celebrate one of the biggest milestones in a newborn baby’s life: finally going home. Complete with miniature graduation caps, tiny gowns and some incredibly proud parents, the initiative is turning what can be an emotional and challenging journey into a celebration that families will remember forever.

“In cases where a newborn needs intensive care, sometimes for months, it can be a very difficult reality for the parents who were so eagerly looking forward to taking their baby home,” explains Sr Juanita Coetzee, unit manager of the hospital’s NICU.

And that is exactly why the team decided that going home deserved a proper celebration.

“For many families, the NICU journey is a long one, with some babies born weighing just a few hundred grams and remaining in our care for months. During this time, we become very attached to our little patients and form close bonds with their parents.

“We often stay in touch long after a baby has been discharged, with some staff members even being invited to these children’s birthday parties years later. It is a special connection formed during a challenging time for families, and we wanted to honour that by celebrating one of the biggest milestones of all – the day a baby goes home for the very first time,” she says.

The hospital staff didn’t just come up with the idea. They made it happen themselves!

Dr Marleen Engelbrecht, a paediatrician at the hospital, got out her crochet hooks and designed a pattern for the tiniest graduation caps imaginable. She even created different sizes to accommodate twins and triplets. Meanwhile, registered nurse Sr Sophia Badenhorst dusted off her sewing machine and started making miniature graduation gowns. The adorable outfits are now kept ready for each new graduate, carefully washed between uses to meet the unit’s strict hygiene standards.

“We fall in love with these little babies, and when they finally get to go home, it feels like the next chapter of their lives is really beginning. It’s a very big day for everyone, especially the family, and the graduation photo captures all the joy of that moment,” Sr Badenhorst says.

Since the initiative began in July, more than 45 babies have already graduated!

“We have a very special team. Some of us have worked together for more than 30 years and we all feel this is where we are meant to be. Even after all this time, there is nothing quite like the moment when we finally get to send a baby home – whether after just a few days or many months. We are honoured to provide the care our babies need, and these graduation photos are our way of celebrating that precious homecoming with every family that passes through our doors,” Sr Coetzee concludes.

I love this initiative. I love that a group of healthcare professionals, who already give so much of themselves to care for our tiniest South Africans, have found another way to make families feel special.

And I can’t wait to see these little graduates do it all again next year. And the year after that. And hopefully, many years from now, when they’re walking across a stage to collect their matric certificates or university degrees, their parents will pull out that very first graduation photograph and remember just how far they’ve come.

Congratulations, little graduates! Your whole lives are ahead of you, and we cannot wait to see all the good things you’ll do.
