Darryl was there to fix the internet, but he was drawn to the piano. What happened next left everyone’s jaws on the floor!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (06 November 2026) – The internet had been off in the estate for five days. Stella Pickard says residents were up in arms, and Vumatel had been going door to door, labouring away to fix the issue.

Then, they arrived at Stella’s home. Lizzy, their domestic worker, let the technicians in.

Stella was upstairs in her office when she heard a single key sound from the piano. Then another. Suddenly, a rush of notes filled their home.

“I heard someone playing a single key on the piano. A little later, another. Then they started playing the piano wholeheartedly!”

She went downstairs to find Darryl Julie, one of the technicians, sitting at their piano. She could hardly believe what she was hearing. It was beautiful.

“I was amazed and he was smiling, his face overjoyed.”

Stella filmed the moment because she wanted to play it back for her son, who is learning the piano. She then posted it to her Instagram Stories. It received so much attention that she later decided to upload the clip as an Instagram Reel, spreading the love for Darryl’s playing even further.

That post has since gone viral, racking up more than 300,000 views!

Watch below.

Stella and Darryl got to talking, and she showed him the clip she had filmed.

“I showed him this video – he put his hands to his mouth in surprise, saying ‘Wow, is that how it sounds when I play?!’”

Stella then discovered that, despite his incredible talent, Darryl did not even own a piano. Seeing how gifted he was, she decided to do a good thing. Within a day, the talented young man had a piano to call his own. How incredible is that?

It all happened because Darryl simply could not ignore the music. He saw a piano and could not resist sitting down behind it. It was like magnetism.

He tells us it has always been that way for him. Born and raised in Eersterivier, he grew up surrounded by music.

“I was raised in a deeply spiritual environment, surrounded by music from both sides of my family. My mother was the singer, and my father was the musician. Music was always part of our lives.”

At 10 years old, while living in a Wendy house, Darryl remembers looking at a guitar standing behind a chair.

“Something about that guitar attracted me like a magnet. I was fascinated by it and wanted to learn how to play. I still remember failing my very first lesson because, according to my father, I had not placed the guitar back in the correct position after using it. It was a small moment, but one that would remain with me throughout my life.”

His father is his greatest inspiration and biggest supporter, he says.

“My father is the person who has always encouraged me to become better. His influence has played a tremendous role in shaping the musician I am today.”

Music became a huge part of his life. He went on to pick up the guitar and keyboard, learning from his dad and playing in church. He also began producing his own beats and rapping.

“Music has always been more than just a hobby to me. It is part of who I am, part of my identity, and something I believe I was born to do.” he says. “My lifelong dream has always been to become the person I know I am on the inside.”

All he needed was an opportunity.

That brings us back to the present. On an ordinary day at work as a technician for Vumatel, Darryl felt the music calling once again. Because he listened, South Africa is listening too.

He says seeing Stella’s post go viral has been overwhelming, like a dream!

“My world has been turned upside down by all of this. The love and support I have received have opened my eyes to the possibilities that may lie ahead. For the first time, I feel as though the door I have been waiting for all these years might finally be opening.”

Stella has stepped in to help Darryl chase that dream. She’s helping him look for opportunities where he can be surrounded by fellow musicians.

“I think being surrounded by other musicians will open opportunities and doors for him.”

When one door opens, a whole new world of possibility unfolds. Darryl is already one step further along in his musical journey with his new piano. With the right support, exposure and community, there’s no telling how far his talent could take him.

If you might have any opportunities for this young musician to grow his talents, reach out to Stella here.

“I was born for this. Music is in my DNA. It has been inside me for as long as I can remember, and I have never stopped believing in the dream.” Darryl says. “If this is my time to shine, then I am ready to take on the world.”
