A fire swept through a Joburg informal settlement called Alexandra earlier this week and displaced 1000 people, so Joburgers set up a crowdfund to raise much needed funds.

The township of Alexandra has been hit by disaster. On Saturday, the 15th of July, the fire started and spread through the community leaving over 1000 people homeless.

The fire was started by a two-plate electric stove being used by residents living in an abandoned factory and spread to over 120 shacks in the area. The government quickly provided tents, blankets and food to the homeless community members.

“Some of the residents who have been affected are school children, so we are in talks with the department of education to assist in providing resources such as uniform and books for the children so that when schools reopen they are not disadvantaged.” – Mogomotsi Mogodiri, spokesperson for Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile

Meanwhile everyday Johannesburg citizens started a crowdfund on the ‘ADDaBIT’ platform to help raise funds.

“Together with the Alexandra community we will assist these families affected by this fire – should you want to be part of rebuilding this community that now really have nothing to their names – please make a donation no matter how big or small.”

To contribute towards the fund and help the people of Alexandra, check out their ADDaBIT fund here or you can get in contact with the ADDaBIT CEO Michael Griffin on 0832122389 or Michael@ADDaBIT.com
