Caster Semenya has just sprinted to gold and glory during the women’s 1500m final at the Commonwealth Games. She broke a record while at it.
Caster Semenya has just earned South Africa another Gold medal and broken a national record. Semenya broke Zola Pieterse’s 34-year-old national 1500 metre-record to win the women’s 1500m gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
She completed the race in 4.00.07! Semenya only took the lead on the 800m mark as she raced past Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech.
Semenya broke the record with just 0.09 sec to spare. The win means that Semenya is now a double Olympic 800m champion, three-times world 800m champion, and now officially a Commonwealth champion as well. Her gold medal is South Africa’s ninth for the Games and which pushed South Africa back up to the fifth spot with a total of 21 medals.
Brad Tandy has also secured a silver medal for SA during the 50m men’s Freestyle race. This is South Africa’s first silver medal in this race since the 2010 games in Dheli.
Once again, social media has been flooded with celebration for Caster Semenya.
