Loreece Harrison shines as Miss South Africa in a new film based on the controversial 1970 Miss World competition!
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 December 2019) – Loreece Harrison shines in Misbehaviour, an upcoming British film that follows the events of the 1970 Miss World competition, which saw the crowning of the first black competitor ever.
Harrison may be best known for her role in Black Mirror but next year the talented actress will be taking on the role of Pearl Jansen, the first coloured Miss South Africa and 1st runner up to the first black Miss World.
Miss World 1970, the 20th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 20 November 1970 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. Fifty-eight contestants competed for the Miss World title.
At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. Claiming that beauty competitions demeaned women, the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition. Not only that, when the show resumed, the result caused an uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favourite but rather Miss Grenada (Jennifer Hosten), who became the first black woman to be crowned Miss World, followed by Miss South Africa (Pearl Jansen) who became the 1st runner-up.
In a matter of hours, a global audience had witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty turned on its head.
The film was released in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s theatrical release was cut short and the film is set to be released early to video on demand globally. The movie will be released on DVD by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on 7 September 2020
