The Animal Welfare Society of SA Disaster Relief Team continues to brave fires, floods, and dangerous crises to ensure every defenceless animal and their family finds safety when an emergency strikes – as shown in their recent rescue at Groenvlei Settlement.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 September 2026) – Whether it is floods, fires, or any other threat to defenceless creatures, the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS) Disaster Relief Team is known for braving danger to save the day.

The team recently threw on their protective gear and raced to the Groenvlei Settlement in Philippi after a nearby business caught fire, sending flames spreading dangerously close to the community.

Upon arrival, the Disaster Relief Team immediately stepped in to assist with evacuations and rescue animals in harm’s way. They brought several animals back to the AWS hospital to be medically assessed, treated, and kept under observation.

Then came a moment that reminded the team exactly why they do what they do. In the midst of the blazing flames and heavy smoke, a mother dog huddled together with her one-day-old puppies.

“Our team was able to get this precious little family to safety,” AWS confirmed.

“They will receive the care they need, and once the puppies are old enough, they will be placed for adoption.”

The society further assured that the mother would be sterilised and safely returned home to her family.

By the end of the long day, the flames were extinguished, and both the animals and their families were safe and given treatment where necessary, proving once again that AWS will always step up when disaster strikes.

“Our Disaster Relief Team responds when animals and communities need help, but these emergency responses are only possible because of YOU.”

AWS welcomes donations from supporters and community members to help provide the fuel, transport, medical care, hospital treatment, food, and emergency support required during crises.

“Thank you to every person who supports our Disaster Relief Team.  Your kindness allows us to answer the call when disaster strikes. Because every life matters.”
