AVBOB launched its foundation in 2012 as a vehicle for Corporate Social Investment initiatives. To alleviate the backlog within the education sector; they started with the construction and donation of container libraries.
South Africa (28 January 2020) – Reading is the foundation of education. The very first thing you are taught at school is how to read and write. When reading foundations are not built to be strong, it is nearly impossible to succeed in all other schooling subjects.
This is one of the reasons why the education level in South Africa is so low. Many low-income and previously disadvantaged schools have been left behind because they don’t have access to libraries and the learners face serious challenges with their day to day school work as a result thereof. Community development lies at the core of AVBOB’s business and corporate social investment strategy. AVBOB is the largest mutual assurance society in Africa. As a mutual insurance society, the company has no shareholders and is technically owned by its more than two million policyholders.
AVBOB’s commitment to community development embraces the education sector of South Africa and through its strategic partnership with the Department of Basic Education, is actively combatting literacy issues through donations of state-of-the-art container libraries to underprivileged schools throughout the country.
Over and above the needs arising from the lack of learning materials these schools often also face the challenge of not having adequate ablution facilities and in a drive to support the DBE’s drive to eradicate dangerous pit latrines at schools, AVBOB is contributing to the Department’s Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) project.
Through collaboration between government and the private sector, pit latrines will be eradicated which will ensure that children won’t have to fear going to the toilet and will be safe at schools.
Through their sustainable community development projects, AVBOB has demonstrated their commitment to responsible corporate citizenship, along with fostering a legacy of success for many South Africans.
As part of the #SAINC nation-building initiative, AVBOB is joining a network of purpose-driven brands to share stories of positive progress in South Africa.
