Bafana Bafana Edge Closer to the World Cup

Bafana Bafana hold on to the top spot in Group C after a crucial draw against Nigeria in the World Cup Qualifier.

Bloemfontein, South Africa (10 September 2025)- The last time Bafana Bafana appeared in the FIFA World Cup was at the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup that was held in South Africa. However, even then, their qualification came automatically as the host nation. The last time they successfully booked a spot through qualification was in 2001 to earn a place at the 2002 tournament that was hosted by Japan and Korea.

Fast forward to 2025, and South Africa is firmly in the hunt for a return to football’s biggest stage. Bafana Bafana earned a crucial 1-1 draw against Nigeria at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday night, keeping them six points clear at the top of Group C and in pole position for qualification with two rounds of matches still to go.

The support at Toyota Stadium was electric, with fans turning the stands into a sea of green and gold. From the first whistle, chants and songs echoed across the stadium, lifting the players’ spirits and creating an atmosphere that made it clear how much this moment meant to South African football supporters.

South Africa started strong, with Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appollis causing problems for Nigeria. The opening goal came in the 25th minute when South Africa’s Nkota raced onto a through ball and sent to the back of the net.

Nigeria fought back and equalised in the 44th minute, with Calvin Bassey bundling in a close-range effort after a cross from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Despite the Super Eagles’ response, South Africa held on for a vital point that keeps their World Cup dream very much alive.

After eight games, Bafana Bafana lead Group C with 17 points, while Nigeria are second with 11. With their eyes on the prize, Bafana are two matches away from making their dream a reality.
