Bafana Bafana return to Bloemfontein, determined to keep South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup dream alive.
Bloemfontein, South Africa (05 September 2025) – South Africa’s hopes of returning to football’s biggest stage is burning even brighter! This evening, Bafana Bafana step onto the Free State Stadium pitch in Bloemfontein with their sights set firmly on edging closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Proudly sitting at the top of Group C in the African qualifiers, Bafana have 13 points from six matches. This is a position many would not have predicted after a shaky start to their campaign, but three consecutive wins have changed the mood completely. Zimbabwe, Benin and Lesotho have all fallen by two-goal margins, and with every victory, the belief has grown that this team could carry South Africa to the world’s grandest football stage.
Today’s clash against Lesotho offers another chance to strengthen their grip on top spot. Their opponents, currently in fifth place, will no doubt bring fight and spirit, but the momentum lies with Coach Hugo Broos’ side. The national team has found its stride at just the right time, and fans in Bloemfontein will be hoping to see their side rise to the occasion.

But of course, every South African eye is also glancing ahead to next Tuesday’s showdown against Nigeria. The long-time rivals who have so often stood in the way of Bafana’s dreams.
Yes, securing more points and staying top of the table is great, but it’s also about pride, and the possibility of seeing the green and gold represented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. A place at that global festival would mark a return to the biggest stage since 2010, when the world came to Mzansi.
The journey is far from over, but right now, Bafana Bafana are giving the country something to believe in.
