With AFCON 2025 drawing closer, Hugo Broos has named an exciting preliminary squad as South Africa begins its mission to bring home a second continental title.

South Africa (27 November 2025) – It’s been almost three decades since South Africa lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy back in 1996, and let’s be honest, South Africans are ready to add another star to that jersey. The excitement is building, and momentum is growing. Could 2025 be the year? The journey starts now.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has officially named his preliminary squad for the 2025 AFCON, taking place from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026 in Morocco.

South Africa has been drawn in Group B, where there will be no easy games. Our opponents? Egypt, which is a seven-time AFCON champion. Zimbabwe is a familiar rival, while Angola is Bafana Bafana’s opening challenge.

That first clash takes place on 22 December 2025 at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, a modern, world-class stadium that seats over 41,000 fans.

Coach Hugo Broos has sparked excitement by calling up 13 in-form and rising players, keeping the door wide open for new faces to make the final cut.

Standout performances in upcoming weeks could turn them from hopefuls into AFCON-bound stars.

Bafana Bafana is looking to dream big and chase history, because 1996 was unforgettable, but South Africans want to write a new chapter.
