Two Bain’s Vlei police officers are being celebrated for going beyond the call of duty to help a man stranded on the side of the road, in the middle of the night.
Bloemfontein, South Africa (28 July 2026) – For every failure to act in public safety and law enforcement, there’s someone else who goes beyond the call of duty to help. It may not always balance out, but there are still people out there who lead with kindness and compassion. This is one such instance.
Jonathan Usher recently posted to Facebook about a drive back home from work at night that took an unexpected turn. His post has racked up over 13,000 likes and over 300 shares…because it celebrates a superpower we South Africans have in numbers – kindness.
“After a long and busy night I was on my way home. Next moment I hear a strange sound and the steering wheel is getting heavier and then it happened.” he recalls.
His tyre had burst and shredded to pieces. In the middle of the night, he had to stop along the road to change it.
“Struggling to get the spare wheel off and the shredded tire, no one stopped to help a man all alone in the middle of the night.” Jonathan recalled.
“Then a miracle came. Sergeant Jokwane & Solo from the [Bain’s Vlei] police station came to the rescue.”
Spotting Jonathan in distress, the pair decided to stop. First, they did their job – they assessed the situation, determined what help was needed and ensured that other vehicles on the road could pass by safely.
Then, they took it a step further. Instead of leaving Jonathan to change out his tyre without help, they stepped in. It was not a part of the job description, but they wanted to go the extra mile to help get his wheels turning again. That is simple kindness in action.
“These two gentlemen assisted me in replacing the shredded tire and making sure each passing car could see us and pass us safely.” shares Jonathan. “There are a lot of negative stories regarding our police but I can happily say that among the many stories, I met these two policemen that showed true commitment to protect and serve our country.”
It’s easy to get weighed down by the bad news, but officers like Sergeant Jokwane and Officer Solo remind us of the heart that still beats on our streets!
“You gentlemen is what our future policemen must strive towards. Thank you for the great service and friendly conversations.” ended Jonathan.
