Phindile Sithole is an inspirational woman who has overcome the odds to become one of sixteen women who work as Bulk Truck Operators for Engen.
South Africa – Women working in male-dominated fields face unimaginable obstacles to get there so when they succeed, it is something we should be shouting from the rooftops.
Phindile Sithole is one of 16 female bulk truck operators employed by Engen and says that while she fully supports Engen’s drive to secure a more gender-balanced world, she always knew that she wanted to be a truck driver and nothing was going to stand in the way of her achieving her dream.
As a professional driver who often has to work long hours, Phindile says she feels honoured to have received the opportunity to work for Engen and enjoys every one of her shifts. It was always her dream to be a truck driver.
“I just love the sound the truck makes – and the size – I wanted nothing else, I just wanted to drive a truck”, says Phindile Sithole
As you can imagine, her slight frame is dwarfed by the tremendous 18-wheeler she pilots. Phindile is employed by Engen as a Bulk Truck Operator or BTO – the professional drivers who ensure that Engen’s petroleum products are safely delivered to their customers nationwide.
Due to the physical strength required, and the long driving distances involved, this used to be a male-dominated field, but Phindile is one of 16 young women who is breaking the ceiling against these stereotypes.
“Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. It’s not only a gender issue but a business issue which is why women empowerment and transformation is at the core of every part of our operations and forms a critical part of our business plan,” – Unathi Njokweni-Magida, Engen’s Head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement
Rigorously trained by Engen, these ambitious women are hard working, eager and motivated, and are carving out successful futures for themselves with a dedicated focus.
As part of the #SAINC nation-building initiative, Engen is joining a network of purpose-driven brands to share stories of positive progress in South Africa. These stories are being featured across social media in small snippets, just like the one below, but you will also be able to watch the full-length features live on television.
