Mama Bongi is heading home to Zimbabwe to be with her children, she leaves behind a wonderful business that is ready and waiting for another inspired baker.

Cape Town, South Africa (07 November 2023) – Mama Bongi’s cookie business was started as a lifeline during the pandemic but today is a thriving business. Sadly, Mama Bongi is getting ready to move back home to Zimbabwe where she can rest and recover from ill health. The task now is to find an equally committed baker to take over her wonderful business.

We first learned about Mama Bongi in November 2020, when her business was launched as a way to earn some money during the pandemic. She managed to start by selling her delicious chocolate chip cookies, earning an additional income to help support her life in South Africa and her children in Zimbabwe.

Working with Julia Finnis-Bedford at Amazing Spaces, they took Mama Bongi’s business and gave it a marketing makeover, creating a brand that has become synonymous with scrumptious bakes. Julia and her team have supported Mama through the highs and lows of running a business – like the time when a horrible human scammed Mama out of R35,000 with a bogus cookie order. Now Julia and Mama are looking for the next best baker to take her place.

Julia took to the popular Mama Bongi Instagram page to share the update that Mama was heading home.

“Dear Mama Bongi Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we share some bittersweet news with you today. Our beloved Mama Bongi, the heart and soul of our cherished business, has made the difficult decision to return to Zimbabwe to be with her children due to some health issues.

Mama Bongi has been the warm, smiling face behind our delightful cookies, filling our lives with sweetness and love. Her legacy is woven into every batch of our beloved treats. She’s not just the baker; she’s family.

While this chapter is closing, we’re excited about the possibility of Mama Bongi’s legacy living on. If you, or someone you know, share our passion for Mama’s cookies and would like to take over this lovely little business that everyone loves, please get in touch with us.

Let’s ensure that Mama’s legacy continues to bring joy to our lives. We’re open to hearing from anyone who wants to carry the torch of this feel-good business.

Mama, you will always hold a special place in our hearts, and your cookies will forever be a source of comfort and happiness. Thank you for the love you’ve baked into every bite.”

The social media post has been filled with love and support for Mama Bongi on her next journey. Julia is hoping to connect with a baker who is ready to take on Mama’s legacy and continue to bake her delicious chocolate chip cookies. If you know of or are the perfect baker, you can reach Julia via email here.
