A ‘Simply Asia’ post is going viral with a R6,000 tip… but we just found 5 other restaurants where a similarly large tip has also been left in the last couple of days. Here’s what we know about this new movement:
Western Cape, South Africa (03 August 2021) – The hospitality industry has been one of the hardest hit during the last 500 days of the lockdown in South Africa, but it seems there are little pockets of kindness that are popping up on our social media timelines as people are randomly leaving massive tips for waiters around the country.
Just yesterday, “Simply Asia” – an Asian Fusion Restaurant in Durbanville posted a photo that quickly went viral.
“An appreciation post to one of our Simply Asia customer’s! Our Durbanville store was in for a big surprise and treated when one of our loyal customers left an R500 tip for each staff member on duty. A total of R6000,00. We are grateful for the generous contribution made to the store and staff during these difficult times.”
Chatting to Good Things Guy, Enzo Cocca – Group General Manager of Simply Asia – said that the thing that made this really beautiful was the fact that the family who tipped the waiter wanted to remain completely anonymous.
But it seems this is not a once-off… and many restaurants around the country are being blessed with tips that range from R6,000 upwards!
Just a few days before this, a little coffee shop in Fourways was gifted a R6,700 tip on a bill for two coffees.
“The only difference with this order was the additional R6,700.00 to their bill as a gift to us!!! Whaaaaaaaaat!!! Yes, you heard right! The gift was to show us that we’re not alone, have people that care for us and believe in what we’re doing and most importantly, want to help lessen the blow that this lockdown has had on a business like ourselves in the Hospitality industry. We had no words and still can’t find any, but thank you.” – DC Coffee Co.
Then a couple of days later, another bill with a tip of R6,000 popped up, this time at Angelos Pizza in Randpark Ridge. And then at NOSH Factory Café in Laser Park. And again at il’Gusto and Cappello’s in Boksburg!
We spoke to a spokesperson from Xpertek Contact – who explained why they had gifted the R6,700 tip to DC Coffee – and seemingly started a national movement.
“At a time when our country really needs it, we decided to spread some hope for Mandela Day and also tried to create something that others could get involved in.”
“Gavin Fletcher – Xpertek Contact’s Operations Director – visited ‘DC Coffee co’. When it came to settling the bill, he decided to add an extra R6,700. We hope that this can help them to keep the doors open and spread some hope within our community.”
The company posted the act of kindness to their social media pages, hoping that others might be inspired to leave large tips too, but it seems the little is quickly growing to a new nationwide movement to bring a little light – and help the locals we love – get through this.
