A winter arts festival is bringing all the heat to Cape Town as a way to support more creatives and galleries during the City’s off-season!
Cape Town, South Africa (09 July 2024) — Winter is in full swing in Cape Town, which means much of the City have gone into hibernation mode. While home may be where the heat is, it isn’t always the best place to find sensations that warm us up from the inside, like being inspired by new experiences or supporting our communities. Bringing the heat to town in the thick of winter is the Heat Winter Arts Festival, which hopes to bring more folks out of their nests and into the world of inspired creativity.
While there are plenty of arts events in the Cape year-round, Heat responds to the winter blues many creatives face as the City hibernates during its off-season where tourists are far fewer and locals lock up. As the event shares, it was created to “boost visitors to galleries in the city centre and to create another platform for live performances”—experiences that go a long way especially for emerging artists.
This year’s theme is “Common Ground”, in response to the economic, ecological and political turmoil that societies around the world are experiencing.
“Given this context, “what conditions are necessary (and possible) to encourage ‘a coming together?” HEAT curator Nkgopoleng Moloi asked in relation to the theme’s formation and curation.
The answer lies in the art, and in the experiencing of it especially during tough times. When people come together to support those bringing beauty to the table, and take away an insightful message of their own understanding, coming together becomes not just a jovial escapade, but the foundation for inspired change.
Organiser Mary Corrigall says: “With a focus on small art businesses, emerging artists and live performers, musicians and singers, we aim to support young cultural producers and those that create visibility for them.”
Running from 11 to 21 July, you can catch a variety of art exhibitions, theatre performances and jazz events on in the City. The focus is on small art businesses, emerging creatives and the youth, with participating galleries including AVA, Ebony/Curated, WORLDART and more.
