They say that cats choose their people. Zorro chose his, after his previous owner made the heartbreaking decision to re-home him after a devastating fire changed everything.

Cape Town, South Africa (30 June 2026) – Before he became the chonky and confident garden explorer he is today, Zorro the delightfully orange cat was known as Phoenix.

He was rushed to a AfriPaw-TEARS Animal Rescue outreach clinic last November after surviving a devastating fire that destroyed homes in the underserved community of Overcome Heights near Vrygrond.

His owner desperately wanted to help him after the blaze left him with severe burn wounds. Phoenix was dehydrated, weak and in urgent need of veterinary care, so he was transferred to the TEARS Veterinary Clinic, where the team worked tirelessly to save him.

After intensive treatment and weeks of recovery, Phoenix was strong enough to move into the cattery. Although his owner made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could have a safer future, it also gave the brave ginger cat the chance to find a forever family.

That family arrived earlier this year.

John and Valentia had started looking for older cats and long-stayers after losing their own beloved cats. They already had their eyes on a few felines at TEARS and even planned to adopt a different ginger cat. Then, they crossed paths with Pheonix…

“We were walking through to where the red cat was, and that is when we spotted Phoenix. He had a little mark on his face from where he had been burned in the house fire,” says John. “Actually, we nearly walked right past him while walking through his enclosure looking for the red cat when. For some reason, I ducked my head down and saw him. I put my arms out, and Phoenix came over and lay in my arms, which he’d never done for anyone else. We didn’t come for him, but we needed to take him!”

The couple adopted him and gave him a new name inspired by the little mask-like markings on his face. Zorro.

These days, he’s thriving.

“Zorro is the funniest cat we have ever met. He loves the garden and is such an adventurer. When he arrived, he was very timid and stayed under the bed for two days. When he did come out, he came out with an ‘I am the boss’ attitude and completely took over.”

John says it’s incredible to see how far Zorro has come.

“He is magnificent. Even his paws that were burnt in the fire are not sore anymore. He sleeps on our bed every night in his chosen position and doesn’t move at all. He is exactly where he should be, and we are so happy to have him. Our Zorro is a much-loved cat.”

After everything he endured, it’s the ending we love and that Zorro deserves. A cat who survived the worst, found the people he was meant to be with, and now spends his days in Garfield mode.
